At this pre-conference workshop results of the EU funded project Smart-A will be presented and a proposed concept for smart appliances and their integration in the energy sytem will be discussed.
The Smart-A project assesses the overall potential for load-shifting by domestic appliances and their role in Demand Response schemes. Alongside in-depth analyses of potential changes to appliances operation, of characteristics of local energy generation and of load management requirements in electricity networks, Smart-A also features a detailed survey of the acceptance of a smart appliances operation by users. Based on these assessments, recommendations and strategies for the implementation of the Smart-A concept, including a business case are developed.
Participation in the workshop is free of charge, but registration is required by e-mail to l.becker@oeko.de until 04th June 2009. More information can be found on the project website: www.smart-a.org
. The Smart-A project is supported by the Intelligent Energy Europe programme of the European Commisssion.

Retailers are powerful market players and, with government encouragement, can transform markets further and faster than regulation and consumer information. Now that EuP is making available test methods and benchmark standards, and given that retailers must understand the current and imminent regulations, the time is right to exploit the power of major retailers at the national and European levels. Some co-ordinated activity across European governments and agencies may help to accelerate this process, and build upon the good but sparse examples around today, such as those promoted through the Eurocommerce ‘REAP’ initiative.
This workshop aims to bring together those who are working with, or who want to work with, retailers on product standards. In particular those interested in shifting the field of choice that retailers offer to their customers towards a more sustainable products. This may be through providing information on benchmark performance levels, regulation, consumer messaging, promotion of consumer information, endorsement schemes, or though voluntary agreements.
The workshop will aim to explore practical ways in which concerted action by governments, energy agencies and others could help retailers to raise the standards of appliances they sell. Also to collate and learn from examples of current work across Europe.
If you are interested in sharing information or attending the discussion, or meeting informally over the EEDAL period, please contact Jeremy Tait at Jeremy@taitconsulting.co.uk, +44 1235 884 896.

The topic is the latest developments in demand response systems and controls for household appliances and equipment with a particular focus on air conditioners. We have already developed a technical specification for a standard interface in Australia and this is currently being implemented. The objective of the session would be to communicate our experience to date and to enthuse others in developing a global platform for this type of technology. As you will be aware, peak loads from air conditioners during extreme weather events are a growing problem in many regions around the world, including Europe.
